A cast-iron skillet isn't ideal for a set-aside-to-soak sort of person. We often heard that we shouldn't use soap and steel wool to wash a cast iron skillet and never ever put it in the dishwasher. Cast iron cookware isn't so hard to deal with! It’s not a big deal if you have accidentally taken off your skillet's smooth seasoning by using soap or cooking any acidic food. You can always re-season the skillet after cleaning. Do follow these steps and you’ll be able to keep your skillet clean, rust-free, and well-seasoned.
We recommend washing the skillet immediately after use, while it is still hot or warm, with warm water. You can apply a small amount of soap and use Grater's pan scraper to remove any food residue.
For stubborn food stains, simmer some water in the skillet for 3-5 minutes. Don’t soak the pan in water or leave it in the sink because it may rust.
Pro Tips: Alternatively, you may scrub coarse salt with a non-metal brush & hot water to replace soap in removing food stains.
Dry it with a Grater's disposable rag or set it over a low flame until all the water has evaporated. If you leave it wet at all, it may end up rusting. If you notice a little black residue on your towel, it's the oxidation of the seasoning and is perfectly normal.
If you don't have Grater's disposable rag, you can dedicate a dishcloth to season your skillet. Otherwise, you will turn your best towels black.
Rub the whole skillet with oil and bake it in an oven at 180°C to 260°C for an hour. Remember to wipe the excess oil to prevent your cookware to become sticky.

After each use, wash with dishwashing soap and hot/warm water. One of the reasons we suggest cleaning the cookware while it's still hot is that the food tends to stick to the pan once the pan is cold down.
If you insist to use cold water, please allow pans to cool completely before washing. Never immerse a hot skillet in cold water. Washing a hot pan in cold water can cause it to warp (bend the surface).
If the metal cools off too quickly, the molecules constrict too quickly, warping [the cast iron skillet and resulting in thermal shock.
Iron rusts when wet! Same goes to our cast iron skillet as they do not contain any chemical coating to protect the iron. Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause the skillet to rust. We recommend no soaking for more than 15 minutes.
Using soap, steel wool, or other abrasives is not the end of the world, but you may need to re-season the skillet. If the skillet is well-seasoned from years of use, a small amount of mild soap may be used without doing much damage. You just need to ensure to rinse it well and season it after drying.
Large amounts of soap can strip the seasoning of your pan, but you can easily re-season your pan as needed. Steel wool is helpful in removing rust from cast iron skillets. We do not recommend you to use steel wool all the time as it may scrub off the seasoning layer which you have built over time.
Pro Tips: Alternatively, you may rub the rusted cast iron skillet with half a raw potato and a sprinkle of baking soda powder. You still have to re-season it after cleaning.
Cast iron skillet will rust and lose its seasoning in a dishwasher. Generally, cast iron, aluminum, and non-stick-coated cookware should stay away from the dishwasher.
If your skillet gets a sticky coating or develops rust over time, scrub it with steel wool and re-season the cast iron. To prevent rust, dry the skillet thoroughly and lightly coat the cooking surface with cooking oil. Cover with a paper towel to protect it from dust.
