"Before I knew better, I used to clean my cast iron skillet with dishwasher liquid and my skillet gets rusty sometimes". 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠?
In this hack, we would like to share a natural method on how to clean your cast iron cookware. All you need is a potato, paired with coarse salt and vegetable oil. This trick will return your rust-covered iron skillet to its former beauty.
- 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭: Potatoes contain oxalic acid which is a natural acid that helps in removing rust on iron. Potato is much easier to grip and scrub with than using your bare hands or a washcloth. Also, scrubbing with coarse salt helps to remove the debris and tough stain on the pan.
- 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬: Coarse salt, oil anad potato.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Sprinkle a generous amount of salt into the skillet. Cut the potato in half so that it fits in the palm of your hand. Place the spud, flat side down, onto the pan, and scrub, pretty vigorously, in a circular motion. Once the pan is clean, rinse with water and pat dry.
- 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: Pour a small amount of oil into the skillet and spread evenly with a paper towel so that the whole thing is covered in a thin layer. Place the skillet in the preheated oven for one hour. Remove from the oven, wipe off any excess oil and you're ready to go.
